CHAPTER NINE

— I know why you asked for the divorce, honey. – I wake up with the sweet and kind voice of a woman coming somewhere from the house. — But I also know that we can still pick up where we left off and make it work. – She smiled in a soft way.

— Candy... – Now I was completely awake and afraid of listening to the conversation, despite being impossible not to.

— Do you remember all the crazy things we did together, my love? – She said with a husky voice and smiled. — Of all those nights when we stayed up making love? Of the hot and slow sex we used to do right in this house? – OK, my ego couldn’t deal with that anymore. So I did what a child would do: slammed the door on purpose to ask for attention, however, I ended up pulling an April Delaney and fell with my hands spread on the floor.... right by little Candy’s feet.... — Did you get hurt, girl? – She said like I was ten...

— No, ma’am. – My voice was shaking and kind of sobbing, but I held on tight and tried not to falter.

— Let me help you, April. – Caine touched my arm to help me, but I pushed him away like his touch gave me pain; which was quite true.

— You don’t have to, I can do it alone. – I said a bit harshly and avoided looking in his direction. — Thanks, anyway. – I think I wouldn’t stand staying in that house anymore. — I want you to take me to Lorraine’s house, detective Weir. – I said the first thing that came to my mind.

— Out of question...

— I think it’s a good idea. – Candace said with happiness and touched Caine’s chest, I looked away from the scene.

— And putting her sister’s and brother-in-law’s lives in danger? – That hit me like a punch. I haven’t thought of that.

— Then I’ll stay in a hotel, problem solved. – I forced my mouth to fake a smile, but I’m afraid I failed miserably.

— I’ll make arrangements. – The captain said right on the spot like she wanted to get rid of me as soon as possible.

— I’m not ten years old, Candace. – I was tired of her fake concern. — I can handle this myself. I only need to call a cab. – I said grabbing my cell phone from the coffee table, however, Caine took it out of my hand and mumbled an intelligible curse.

— I’ll take you.

— I’m on my way too....

— Goodbye, Candace! – He said already grabbing a backpack, my purse and pushing me out as well. — Lock the door when you’re out, you know where to leave the keys....
